Michael Dawson is a Fulbright scholar, DMA candidate in choral music and teaching assistant at the Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California. Before moving to the U.S he conducted the National University of Ireland, Maynooth Chamber Choir from 2011 - 2016 and led them on several International tours to the U.S, China and Spain. In 2015 Michael became the youngest ever conductor to win the Pavarotti Trophy and Choir of the World competition at the Eistedfodd in Llangollen, Wales. Following the award the Michael led the  choir on a world tour in 2016.

Before taking over Maynooth University Chamber Choir Michael toured the world as a singer with internationally acclaimed choral group Anúna. He is passionate about sharing Irish music and culture and is regularly invited adjudicate and facilitate workshops with choirs around the world. He believes all children should have an opportunity to learn music and set up Fingal Academy of Music in 2013  to bring high quality music education to North Dublin. Michael currently oversees the Academy which is now run by Director Donal Kearney. 

 

He holds a Masters degree in Ritual Chant and Song, specializing in Gregorian chant performance from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick where he also lectured in musicianship. Other choirs conducted, include the USC Thornton Concert Choir, the award-winning Enchiriadis Chamber Choir, Fingal Youth Choir (founder), Fingal Children's Choir (founder), St. Michael's College Boys Choir (founder) and Dun Laoghaire Choral Society, Sonas global choir (University of Limerick) and the Supertones children's choir.

 

As a composer Michael's works have been performed and recorded by choirs in Ireland and are heavily influenced by chant, traditional Irish and Pan-Celtic melodies and modes. He is currently studying composition with Dr. Morten Lauridsen and Dr. Nick Strimple.
